A Mossad Leader Perspective on the Middle East and the World
Efraim Halevy
Reported by Marc Eliany
Efraim Halevy, led and worked for the Mossad for many years. He says that it is hard for secret intelligence people to be modest, as they are trained to accomplish the impossible, always testing limits and pushing them farther. He also claims that Israeli politicians have little choice but follow the advice of professionals like him, i.e., Mossad agents, among other security or military advisors, for when politicians do not, the harsh Middle East reality forces them to do so. In this respect, Halevy shows respect for Shamir and Rabin, who worked closely with intelligence staff, but very little for Shimon Peres, who did not.
Halevy criticizes Europeans for demanding of Israel to grant rights and privileges to Palestinians while they deprive a large Moslem population of rights in their own backyard. He also claims that Europe’s investment in economic development in Mediterranean countries, intended to alleviate economic hardship in neighboring poor countries, is not significant and certainly minor compared to subsidies granted to European farmers.
Efraim Halevy also claims that Arafat was not interested in a peace treaty.
